This is how lay odds look like on the Betfair Exchange

We’re using Betfair for our example, but the on screen layout at all betting exchanges is similar. What you will notice are two different boxes. The blue box is your traditional back bet, and the pink one a lay bet.

For the purpose of this example, we are going to show you how to place a lay bet on Paris Saint-Germain. Remember, this the same as backing Paris Saint-Germain not to win.

Let’s think about the Melbourne Cup again. Remember: there can only be one winner. But what about the others trailing behind them? If you place a lay bet in a “Win” market, you can celebrate if the runner tails off at the back of the field.

Liability = [lay odds x backer’s stake] – backer’s stake

On the other hand, if you have layed Man City at 1.74 and they have a poor start to the season, their price to win the Premier League will soon rise. You'll then be able to back them at a higher price (for less stake) to remove your risk.

If your lay bet wins, you’ll receive the £100, minus a commission of 5%. This is how our betting exchange of choice for this example, Betfair, make their money.

For example, if you have backed Man City at 1.73 and they're leading the Premier League by 10 points at Christmas, you will be able to lay them at a much lower price in order to secure a profit.

A lay bet is a bet that something will not happen, in contrast to a back bet, which is a bet that something will happen. You could think of it as the opposite of a regular back bet.

Opas lay-vedonlyöntiin aloittelijoille

Lay betting is an option on a betting exchange which allows gamblers to play the role of a traditional bookmaker. You set the odds of the bet, and you potentially win the backer’s stake if the selection loses. If the selection wins, you lose the backers stake multiplied by the price of the selection (minus the stake amount).

As they recorded a string of stunning results during - including wins home and away against the Netherlands - their odds to win Euro 2016 started to steadily drop.

It was a fantastic back-to-lay opportunity, with traders who backed Iceland earlier at odds of 500/1 able to lay at much shorter odds in order to lock in a profit.

Back and Lay Betting Explained for Beginners | Goal Profits

What is the meaning of lay and back in betting

Lay betting is the opposite to ‘traditional’ betting. With lay betting, you bet on a team not to win instead of backing them to win. Lay bets can only be placed at an online betting exchange, like Betfair. This guide will show you how important lay betting is to the matched betting process and how it’s not as complicated as it sounds!

In a nutshell, a lay bet is when you back an event NOT to happen

Lay-vedonlyönnin keskeinen näkökohta on vastuun käsite, eli liability.
